Top Soil
County Conservation
Company’s enriched topsoil is derived from a blend of sandy loam soil
and screened leaf compost. The integration of 20% compost to the topsoil
heightens the organics, making it ideal for planting and seeding. Topsoil
is recommended for planting grass seed, raising or creating flowerbeds
and the formation of any planting berms. The recommended depth for
the new grass seed is 4” of topsoil.

Compost Soil
The
compost soil at County Conservation Company is derived from leaf
and trimmings. County Conservation Company’s compost is aged and
screened to 3/8 of an inch to craft a dark rich organic soil. Rutgers
University recommends the use of compost for roadside restoration,
erosion control and the top dressing of lawns and athletic field.
There are many other uses for compost as well. Because of compost’s
capacity to retain moisture, it is ideal for a base layer for laying
sod. Compost soil is high in nitrates and very low in heavy metals
allowing it to be used as a soil enhancement. In contrast, other
soil amendments derived from bio-solids (human waste) are found
to be high in heavy metals. According to research at the University
of Maryland, leaf compost soil contains all of the essential plant
nutrients, which reduces the need for chemical fertilization. Plants
and flowers can thrive for years with a single application of compost.
Compost soil is also being recognized for its inherent fungicidal
properties, reducing the need for chemical fungicides.

The unscreened topsoil
has been stripped from local farm fields to make way for new construction.
There are no added organics, as in the screened topsoil, and the unscreened
topsoil is likely to contain some roots and stones.
